Designer keeps 'Legally Blonde' in the pink
Barnes and his assistants cruised shops along Fifth and Madison avenues, casing the couture and checking out shoppers' attire. Asking associates in Los Angeles to scope out Rodeo Drive, Barnes scouted the collegiate styles at Harvard and workingclass wardrobes of suburban Boston.
"We tried to get a synergy of all the different worlds this story inhabits," explains Barnes.
"Legally Blonde," as many recall, concerns Elle Woods, a West Coast sorority princess who follows her exboyfriend to Harvard Law School and proves to be wiser than the Ivy League smarties.
Based on the popular Reese Witherspoon flick, the $8 million musical won warm reviews during its San Francisco tryout and opens tonight at the Palace Theatre after a month of practically soldout previews.
Starring Laura Bell Bundy as Elle, "Legally Blonde" is staged by Tonywinning choreographer Jerry Mitchell. In his first time out as a director, Mitchell gave Barnes a valuable tip regarding the heroine's somewhat excessive fashion sense.
"Jerry said to me at the start that Elle doesn't really fit in anywhere," Barnes recalls. Whether she arrives at a deluxe Beverly Hills restaurant or a modest nail salon, says Barnes, "everyone looks at her like, 'What just walked in the door?'"
As for himself, Barnes thinks fondly of Elle as "her own pink person."
A stocky, rumpled fellow in his late 40s with a shock of black hair and an amiable manner, Barnes is running late when he arrives at the wardrobe room in the Palace basement. Apologizing, Barnes explains he was fitting Jo Anne Worley for her "fancy dress" as dizzy Mrs. Tottendale in "The Drowsy Chaperone."
"You never finish with a musical the work goes on way past opening," notes Barnes, whose frivolous 1920s fashions for "The Drowsy Chaperone" nabbed him a Tony Award. Once a show is successfully launched, more costumes must be built for understudies, swings and replacements.
In the meantime, Barnes has been thinking pink for "Legally Blonde." Bundy's 16 costumes flaunt a myriad of pink shades contrasting Elle against the glossy pastels of the California scenes and Harvard's golden brown environment. "Everything from magenta to cotton candy," says Barnes, describing the key tint as "a fuchsia kind of pink" complementing Bundy's skin.
While Elle's clothes look ostensibly "real," most have been made from scratch to withstand the wear of eight shows a week. The same goes for the wardrobe of the 27member cast.
Designing modern dress is "almost like doing two shows at the same time," remarks Barnes, who fielded a similar challenge for "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels." The designer still sketches characters' attire, chooses fabrics, bids the job among workshops and supervises fittings, but he also "has to be on the street every day" finding accessories and special pieces.
"Legally Blonde" producers have inked promotion deals with highstyle icons like Tiffany and Nanette Lepore in exchange for their goods, but Barnes hit Canal Street hunting knockoffs that will register as genuine from the stage.
"We don't have the money to go to Louis Vuitton and buy a $4,000 purse, even though that's what a character would carry," he says.
Barnes has taken care to create an impression of contemporary clothes rather than replicating the latest styles for the show's 275 costumes. "The look is today current but not faddish," says Barnes. "We try to avoid trends that will already look dated in 2008." From experience, Barnes reserved 7 percent of his budget to fix fashion mistakes or other changes deemed necessary once the production was on its feet.
A former West Coast native now living here in the West Village, Barnes was a literature major at San Diego State until a professional designer encouraged him to study costume. "I didn't even know costume design was a job," confesses Barnes. "I thought it was a hobby."
A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he later taught for nearly 20 years, Barnes has spent much of his career in regional theater. For nine years, he was resident designer of Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, counting "The Wizard of Oz" and "Follies" among his favorites. "Legally Blonde" marks Barnes' fifth Broadway production, although he has designed "The Radio City Christmas Spectacular" and even for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus.
Despite his expertise, "Legally Blonde" presented the designer with one new challenge.
"I've dressed an elephant before, but never a dog," says Barnes, michael kors pas cher, who outfitted an 8pound Chihuahua named Chico for his role as Elle's canine chum Bruiser. Barnes usually found it easier to match Elle's ensembles to Bruiser's attire than the other way around.
Chico was generally amenable to wearing items such as the argyle sweater Bruiser sports upon his arrival at Harvard. But during dress rehearsals, the dog initially balked at his finale costume. "He's a bit of diva," says the designer.
