DEAN Mercer is serious.
With a new coach, a new home and the same enthusiasm that took him to the top of ironman racing, Mercer yesterday declared he had lost none of the motivation as he chases the one crown to elude him throughout his career the Coolangatta Gold.
"To me this race epitomises what ironman racing is all about and we don get many chances to compete in the endurance races like it anymore," said Mercer, who joined defending champion Caine Eckstein,[url=http://www.fcgeo.ca]cheap ugg boots[/url], inspirational Chris Walker and threetime women champion Hayley Bateup at the launch of the October 18 race yesterday.
"It engraved in my blood, it in my nature and I enjoy doing this."
"The driving motivation is that I haven won one."
Under the guidance of legendary Northcliffe coach Pat O father of ironman, who relocated to the Coast with his family earlier this year, will have the young boys in his sights when he heads out for his seventh Coolangatta Gold.
And don be fooled by his expectations, with Mercer fighting spirit sure to push him to new heights.
"In the past I have been a little dissatisfied with my preparation and training under different coaches, so I think that this (preparation) has been more satisfying for me," said Mercer, who finished third in 1992 and 2006.
"I realistic about my expectations at this stage of the game obviously with Caine being the undisputed champion without a doubt.
"It more a personal achievement for me than anything else and I really looking forward to it."
With twotime champion Eckstein heading a starstudded field, Mercer, who celebrates his 40th birthday a month after the event, knows it will be tough.
But like he has done throughout his illustrious career, who has vowed to give it his all.
"It a true test of physical and mental strength and fitness, but above all I love this race and I have a lot of respect for it and everything that it stands for," said Mercer.
Defending champion Eckstein, who won his first Gold in 2005, is aiming to become the first man to capture three titles when he chases the $20,000 winner purse.
Having just returned from the US Surf Ski Marathon, where he finished fourth, the 23yearold was feeling stronger than 12 months ago.
And he was poised to lead from the front again to counter the challenges from the likes of Mercer and the Sunshine Coast Matt Poole who is shaping as his main rival.
"Last year the race worked out perfectly for me but this year I got another year under my belt, I feel stronger, a lot quicker and hopefully it will work out," he said.
Surf Life Saving Australia general manager of sport Grant Baldock expects more amazing stories to come from this year race, first won by Guy Leech 25 years ago.
Among those could be Bateup, who is looking for another perfect race as she did last year.
But she will not have ot all her own way, with 2007 winner Alicia Marriot, who has relocated from Perth to the Sunshine Coast to ramp up her preparations, and Northcliffe Courtney Hancock expected to push her all the way.
