That 1968 Rambler suits 'Iron Man' Stewart to a T
this car is like walking your dog and visiting with everyone who stops to pet it. It a great way to get attention and have some social interaction, says Ivan Man Stewart, the offroad racing icon.
ask me, do you drive a Rambler? Stewart says with a grin. nobody has nice, clean Ramblers. BEGIN BIGBOXAD >
But a recent relocation from their ranch in East County to a highrise condominium in downtown San Diego required the liquidation of a dozen vehicles Stewart had in storage.
Every vehicle that couldn move downtown to the condo and the one parking space there was auctioned. Except the Rambler, which is housed at Stewart ProTruck Racing Shop in El Cajon.
just have a fondness for this car, he says, though he doesn Linda feels the same way. It doesn do as much for her as it does for me except that she happy, I happy. Rambler days began 13 years ago when Stewart was shopping for a used motor home. He had responded to an ad in the paper and the seller, an elderly resident of Lakeside,www.floware.fr, also had a Rambler in the carport. The Rambler caught Stewart eye.
people had purchased the car new in 1967 from Davies Rambler in downtown San Diego, Stewart says. still has the Davies dealership license plate frame on it. single little detail about the car had been documented in a notebook, he continues. Right down to kind of wax he used on it and whether he liked it or not! It only had about 50,000 original miles on it. asked him what he wanted for it, and he said $1,500, so I bought it and the motor home, too. a little TLC new tires, alternator and some touchup on a couple of dings it was ready to drive. And drive it he does.
think I enjoy it more than my 2006 Toyota Sequoia, Stewart says. know it takes me back to a simpler time in life when we had simpler things . the cars we drove didn have a lot of technology. Rambler gets him from point A to point B just fine.
it a great conversation piece when I in the mood to visit, he says.
The conversation can be enlightening when he shows up at an event like the Friday night Cruisin Grand Classic Car Cruise in Escondido.
was at the car show and this young guy walked up to my car and was checking it out . Finally he looked at me and asked, is it? that it is a 1968 Rambler Ambassador, the young man replied: I never heard of one of those. course, Stewart says, you think about it, there really no reason an 18yearold would know what a Rambler is. as there is little reason to suspect that an offroad racing champion who loves speed would drive one. (Now retired from desert racing, his storied career includes four OffRoad World Championships and three overall wins in the Baja 1000.)
ask me why I drive this car, the same way they used to ask me why I had a certain type of dog, Stewart says. drives a Rambler, they say, like they used to say, do you have that schnauzer? response. don need a German shepherd. I like my schnauzer. And I like my Rambler, too. SIZE=1 NOSHADE>
